FORMATS FOR 2007 ISSUES IN WHITE ACE
COMMEMORATIVE SUPPLEMENTS
This compilation is being published to assist in collecting currently available issues in advance of publication of the 2007 White Ace album supplements.
The Commemorative Singles SIMPLIFIED pages are intended to
simplify the collector's stamp purchasing requirements, and are thus an
ideal choice for a beginning collector. Released for the first time by
White Ace for the 1996 issues, they have been continued for each
subsequent year's issues and will continue to be published, in the same
format,
for the 2007 issues. These pages will generally seek to show each face
different stamp only once. For stamps issued in se-tenant format - i.e.
more than one stamp design in a pane - the smallest intact unit will
be shown that contains all designs. This will usually be a strip, block
or full booklet pane. All face different versions of each commemorative
issue will be included and will thus enable the collector to assemble
a complete commemorative collection.
The Commemorative Singles (complete) pages will continue to
be
published in their original format for collectors wishing to assemble a
more
detailed and comprehensive collection. For se-tenant issues, these
pages
will show a set of singles and a strip or block as in the past.
Other
stamp formats will continue to be shown in a manner consistent with
prior
printings of this album.

Many of the 2007 commemorative issues listed are unexceptional and
follow formats long established for each of the albums listed. For
those which do not fit these established patterns, we offer the
following explanations.
In the White Ace Plate Block Albums, a plate block is considered the
smallest block (of 4 or more stamps) that can be taken from the margin
of the sheet, that contains all stamp designs, and has attached selvage
bearing a plate number. If more than one such block can be removed from
a sheet
and the plate number is adjacent to a different stamp design in
any
of these, then each such example is shown in our Plate Blocks Complete
pages. In our Plate Blocks Simplified pages, any such plate position
can be shown. In most cases, there will be two rows or columns of
stamps opposite the
plate number. (This definition may vary somewhat where there is a
particularly attractive header or illustrated selvage or where there is
more than
one plate number along the same margin of the sheet).
With this as guidance, we will show the Pacific Coast Lighthouses as 3
plate blocks
of 6 stamps in our Plate Blocks Complete pages (one lower left, one
lower right and one of either upper left or lower right), and as one
plate block of 6 in our Plate Blocks
Simplified pages. Precedents for showing plate blocks of 6 in this
arrangement are Southeastern Lighthouses (2003), Reptiles and
Amphibians (2003), All Aboard
(1999), Bright Eyes (1998), River Boats (1996), Recreational Sports
(1995) and Antique Cars (1995).
Our layout for the Art of Disney issue, following the same logic,
requires 2 plate blocks of four (one upper and one lower).
The Mahogany Speedboat sheet is laid out so that a single plate number
is centered at the bottom of the sheet, alligned with a vertical die
cut. Further, the smallest possible block containing the plate number
and all four stamps is a block of six stamps -
which is what we will show in our plate block pages. Because these
stamps are arranged on the sheet as strips of 4, we will include a
strip of 4 in our singles complete and singles simplified pages. We
failed to recognize this in our first posting of this guide and we
apologize if this caused you any difficulty.
Likewise, the
smallest block containing all stamps that can be extracted from
anywhere in the sheet is also a block of 6. Because of this, we will
include a block of 6 in our singles complete, singles simplified and
blocks pages.
Several issues, having souvenir sheet or booklet formats, have either
no plate numbers (International Polar Year, Jamestown, Star Wars and
Alpine Tundra), or have plate numbers on the back of the pane (Hearts
booklet pane and Love & Kisses booklet pane). Our practice has
been, and continues to be, to include examples of such issues in our
plate block pages.
What is more unusual, are the several issues that have no copyright
markings (International Polar Year), or copyright markings on the
back of the sheet (Love & Kisses booklet pane, Star Wars, Hearts
booklet pane,
Mahogany Speedboats, Alpine Tundra and Christmas Knits vending pane).
Because the
copyright markings are not on
the face of the pane, these will not be shown in our Copyright Singles
or Copyright Blocks album pages.
On the Pollination booklet pane, the copyright marking is not located
adjacent to the stamps, but rather is part of the identification block
on the pane and is some distance from the stamps. For this reason, this
issue will not be included in the Copyright Singles pages, and a full
pane will be included in the Copyright Blocks pages.
For James Stewart, we will show a full pane in our Singles Complete,
Blocks, and Plate Blocks Complete pages as we usually do for Legends of
Hollywood issues. Yoda is a similar case, with a large area of
illuminated selvage adjacent to the stamps on the pane. For Yoda, we
will show a full pane as for Jimmy Stewart. This is consistent with our
treatment of similar issues in the past: Georgia O'Keefe (1996), Calder
(1998), Frida Kahlo (2001), Andy Warhol (2002), and all of the Warner
Cartoon Characters issues.
In deciding what to include in our Commemorative Singles pages, the
contemporary holiday issue is often the most challenging. This issue
usually has stamps released in three or four formats, and several times
we have felt that stamps of one format we identical to stamps of
another, and have omitted one of the formats. For the Holiday Knits
stamps, the sheet stamps would be included without question. The
Vending Stamps and ATM stamps have a similar sized image which is
smaller than the image on the sheet stamps, and differ slightly in
color, likely because they were printed by different printers. So, we
include all three of these. The stamps of the double sided booklet are
the same size as the sheet stamps, but again differ in color --
particularly the background colors, but also to some extent in the
colors of images. Thus, we will include all four formats in our
2007 Commemorative Singles pages.
For other issues which may be puzzling, we direct the
interested collector to prior issues which may be a
precedent. For example: Alpine Tundra - see Florida Wetland (2006),
Northeast Deciduous Forest (2005), Pacific
Coral Reefs (2004), Arctic
Tundra (2003), Longleaf Pine Forest
(2002) and earlier Nature of America issues.
